![]() He was soon promoted to Operations Manager in addition to overseeing the south wing expansion to the facility. From 1942-1946 he enlisted in the field artillery branch of the United States Army and served in South Pacific region during World War II. While in the Army he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star, achieving the rank of Major. ![]() Following the war, he returned to Norman and resumed his career with the Student Union. He became General Manager following the death of Ted Beaird in 1949. He also served as Secretary Manager of the Board of Trustees until his retirement in 1979. ![]() Freeland was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church for over 75 years. He was also actively involved with civic organizations including the Norman Lion's Club, Norman Chamber of Commerce, 32 degree Mason, and the Norman Shrine Club. He was a long-time support of the University of Oklahoma and an OU football season ticket holder for 59 years.Īt the university, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity. Other interests included gardening, real-estate and finance. Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Norman son Bill Freeland and his wife Libby of Eureka Springs, AR daughter Judy of Norman four granddaughters, Kristin Agent-Meier and husband Scott of Norman, Megan Agent-Curry and husband Jay of Norman, Ellen Freeland of Fayetteville, AR and Emy Freeland of Eureka Springs, AR grandson Will Agent of Norman and sister Opal Freeland-Hueneke of Tulsa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Anna brother Merl son-in-law Larry Agent and two brother-in-laws, David Wood Gish and Stewart Harral. Bearers will be Don Harral, Larry Harral, Steven Harral, Scott Meier, Jay Curry, Mike Queen. Honorary bearers will be James Adair, Fritz Voelker, and Phyllis Hillery.
